United States Department of Transportation (USDOT)
DOT occupies a leadership role in global transportation.  With over 53,000 employees in the U.S. and around the world, the Department is dedicated to improving transportation by making it safer, less congested, better connected, environmentally friendly and fully operational in all conditions.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
The U.S. DOT's lead agency in the area of motor vehicle and highway safety. Includes the following specific resources:

  • National Center for Statistics and Analysis
    Nationwide information on traffic crashes and injuries

  • Traffic Records
    To improve the timeliness, accuracy, completeness, uniformity, integration, and accessibility of the safety data for highway safety purposes at the local, state, and national levels. Traffic records data are the basis for defining, managing, and evaluating traffic safety activities and performance.

  • Office of Emergency Medical Services
    Focuses on the areas of standards, education, systems, workforce, and a national EMS information coordination

Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)
The Federal Highway Administration is one of eleven modal administrations within the U.S. Department of Transportation. FHWA is charged with the broad responsibility of ensuring that America's roads and highways continue to be the safest and most technologically up-to-date.

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)
Federal agency that oversees commercial motor vehicle safety. Activities include enforcement of safety regulations, targeting high-risk carriers and commercial motor vehicle drivers, improving safety information systems and commercial motor vehicle technologies, strengthening commercial motor vehicle equipment and operating standards, and increasing safety awareness.Includes a bi-monthly Safety Activities Newsletter, road user resources and professional resources including facts & data and training & education.

  • Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program (MCSAP)
    The MCSAP is a Federal grant program that provides financial assistance to States to reduce the number and severity of crashes and hazardous materials incidents involving commercial motor vehicles (CMV). The goal of the MCSAP is to reduce CMV-involved crashes, fatalities, and injuries through consistent, uniform, and effective CMV safety programs.

  • A & I Online (FMCSA's Analysis and Information Web site)
    Contains SafeStat Online, a data-driven analysis system that determines the current relative safety status of individual motor carriers, crash statistics, and other safety related statistics.

Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA)
Coordinates the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) research programs and is charged with advancing the deployment of cross-cutting technologies to improve the Nation’s transportation system.

Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA)
The Office of Hazardous Materials Safety is the Federal safety authority for the transportation of hazardous materials by air, rail, highway, and water.

Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) was created to promulgate and enforce rail safety regulations; administer railroad assistance programs; conduct research and development in support of improved railroad safety and national rail transportation policy; provide for the rehabilitation of Northeast Corridor rail passenger service; and consolidate government support of rail transportation activities.
