Key facts about rural transportation safety

  • Half of the 42,000 crash-related fatalities in the United States occur on two-lane rural roads.
  • Crash victims are five to seven times more likely to die if arrival to a hospital exceeds 30 minutes. The time between a crash and arrival at a hospital averages 34 minutes in urban areas and 52 minutes in rural areas.
  • 62 percent of all alcohol-related fatalities involving passenger vehicles occur on rural roads.

The Center for Excellence in Rural Safety, established by the 2005 federal transportation act, is a joint program between the University of Minnesota's Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs and the Center for Transportation Studies, and sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration, to facilitate research, training, and outreach activities related to rural transportation safety.
